Playing in the sand with seven, sexy, shirtless men is a pretty great way to spend an afternoon, right? If you have spent any time in Austin, Texas this summer, then you know the heat is sweltering! Add hot sand and hot men to the mix and you are likely to implode. What an afternoon!

As I was confidently running around in my bikini with the boys, I couldn’t help but flash back to the old days. It was not too long ago that running AND wearing a bikini were both out of the question. I was too heavy to run for more than a few moments and too ashamed of my 205 pound figure to wear a bikini. So I stayed on the sidelines and watched life go by, never believing that I could be the woman with the hot body on the beach.

Until…

I realized that life is attitude. What you can achieve is what YOU believe you can achieve.

So…

I chose it. I believed it. I chose to lose the weight and believed that I could get hot. At a size 18, I looked in the mirror and saw the size 4 figure that I wanted. I ate right, exercised moderately, and kept a positive attitude. Almost 70 pounds and an 8 ½ pound baby boy later, I have maintained both my slim and toned figure as well as my beaming smile.

Of course…

Postnatal weight loss is unique. For many women, it is the first time they have ever had to lose a substantial amount of body fat. Our bodies are designed to store the fat when we are pregnant and we do. Also, our muscles are stretched and moved and manipulated to accommodate the baby. Fortunately for us, if we decide that we want our bodies to be fit, trim and healthy, we can be. The tight tummy, the shapely butt, the toned arms and legs; they are all just weeks of exercise and healthy nutrition away.

Now…

Who is next? Who is ready to be the hot mom on the beach? Are you already hard at play creating her? I can’t wait to see!

I just finished up a weekend conference and am now sitting by the pool in a gorgeous resort in Austin, Texas. I feel so spoiled today. This pool is utterly amazing. There are five levels of water, each with a waterfall that elegantly falls into the next level. To make it truly a paradise; every pool has an unobstructed view of the blue water of Lake Travis. Not a bad work trip, huh?

So during the past few days, I have sat in a conference room listening to speakers. (They were amazing, by the way!) However, I knew that after a day of sitting and eating that I would be getting into my bikini.

As moms, we get really, really good at multitasking. I’m sure you can think of endless examples in your own life. So why should exercise be any different? While listening to the speakers during in the convention room with 75 other people, I got in a fantastic abdominal workout…without anyone knowing! Great, right?

So here are the 3 awesome, flat belly exercises that what I did while at my work conference. They are simple, effective, and you can do them too.

1. Tight Tummy Squeeze: Sit up straight and squeeze you abdominals tightly. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat for 10 reps. Complete 10 sets.

2. Abdominal Leg Lifts: Sit up straight and squeeze your abdominals tightly. Straighten your legs and extend them out so that your heels are resting on the floor, with your feet at a 90 degree angle to your legs. Slowly lift your legs (together) off the floor to a maximum of about 12 inches. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat for 5 reps. Complete 10 sets.

3. Water Bottle Bikini Abs: Complete the same exercise that we did in the Tight Tummy Squeeze, but superpower the exercise by adding a little weight resistance to it with . During the squeeze, pick up a water bottle and hold it in your fully extended arm during the full 10 second exercise. Repeat for 5 reps. Complete 10 sets.

These 3 exercises will burn your tummy quickly, and all while completing your work day.

So that brings us back to this moment. Me…typing by the pool…in my little, black bikini. My tummy is looking SO flat and toned and it feels amazing.

And please pardon this rare occurrence, but I am going to close with a little rant…

I am SO sick of all the women that go around barking at other moms that they will NEVER get their flat stomachs back. To put it simply…they are wrong. If you want it back and if you are willing to work for it…you will have it back. Remember—if you say you can, than you CAN.

Keep it up, Hot Mommies. Tune out those naysayers who tell you it isn’t possible. They are WRONG.

Robin vs. The Pastry Shop

Okay, so we’ve all had those moments. You’re on vacation, you are relaxed and carefree. You are away from your normal life and routines. Your refrigerator full of healthy food choices is far away, not only physically but mentally. The energy of a new city is intoxicating and well, so are the endless, tempting food choices you pass by every ½ a block!

So welcome to my yesterday. I am vacationing in San Francisco, California. This city if full of vibrant energy, beautiful and historic sightseeing, amazing shopping, and unbelievable food. The sheer abundance of restaurants is overwhelming. Each short city block boasts three or four eateries each with tempting menus. So how on earth can I last a week in this city without packing on some extra pounds for the trip home?

I was doing really well, resisting temptation after temptation, until I saw it. The beautiful colors caught my eye and I simply couldn’t look away. It was a pastry shop…and it was loaded with some of the most beautiful fruit tarts I have ever seen. When I was overweight, pastries, and specifically fruit tarts topped with colorful, sugar glazed fruit, was my weakness. I could eat five of them, and well…I used to!

PAY ATTENTION HERE! This is the part where we get ourselves into trouble. We start to justify our behavior by using self affirmations like:

“Hey, it doesn’t count. I’m on vacation.”

“You only live once.”

“How often am I in San Francisco at this pastry shop? I should definitely have one!”

We are ALL guilty of rationalizing bad habits with statements like these. It is really important to recognize these behaviors and stop them before they start. In the Hot Mommy Happy Baby Fitness Solution, we learned how to conquer these self defeating thoughts by replacing them with constructive ones. If you can beat these thoughts, you can conquer any craving!
So getting back to that San Francisco pastry shop I encountered yesterday. I went in. I looked. I marveled. I talked to myself.

“I am so healthy, vibrant and full of energy when I eat right.”

“The new cocktail dress I bought for tonight is going to look amazing on my trim and fit figure.”

“I had a baby and have the best body of my life because I make great food choices.”

And then I walked away with a smile on my face.

So in Robin vs. The Pastry Shop, the score is Robin: 1, Pastry Shop: 0.

What is the easiest way to stay faithful to your healthy diet? In two words: Power Snacking!

I love cooking simple, delicious and healthy meals. They taste great, are wonderful for my body and give me energy to keep up with my son and my busy life. I have found that staying on a healthy meal plan is the easy part. The hard part is healthy snacking. Cravings always seem to creep up in the late morning or afternoon. Unfortunately, this is when most of us are tempted to grab a quick and easy fix like a candy bar or a bag of chips. These are high calorie, high fat, low nutritional foods…and these sneaky little snacks can kill an otherwise healthy diet.

So how do we conquer these pesky snack cravings and maintain a diet that will keep us fit and full of energy? Look for high protein, high fiber, high water content foods with low calories and saturated fat. Why? Simply put; foods full of fiber, protein and water make you feel full. Here are my favorites.

1. Plain Greek Yogurt with Strawberries: 135 Calories & 16g Protein! This is my favorite morning snack. A generous serving of plain Greek yogurt (about ¾ cup) and 1 cup of strawberries is not only delicious, but exceptionally filling. Make sure to carefully select your product and only go for a Greek yogurt with 0% fat. They are typically labeled very clearly. Don’t worry, unlike other fat free foods, it tastes wonderful. Even better, with 16g of protein in one serving, you will find yourself full for hours.

2. String Cheese and a Large Apple: 205 Calories, 8g Protein, 6g Fiber.
Quick, easy, nutritionally significant and most importantly…delicious. This snack is a winner.

3. An Orange and Almonds: 229 Calories, 7g Protein, 7g Fiber. A medium orange and one ounce of almonds (about 15-24) will leave your satisfied, energized and, as an added bonus, studies have shown that almonds reduce cholesterol.

4. Reduced-Fat Triscuits Topped with Avocado and Tomato: 202 Calories, 4g Protein, 5g Fiber. This snack is fantastic. Seven crackers, four grape tomatoes and three tablespoons of avacado may not seem like much, but it packs a punch that will have you feeling great until your next meal. It looks pretty, it tastes great, it fills you up, and if that isn’t enough, it has lots of heart healthy oleic acid from the avocados and anti cancer properties from lycopene, which is found in the tomatoes. It’s definitely my favorite afternoon snack.

5. Lean Turkey Slices and Grapes: 200 Calories & 16g Protein.
A healthy portion of lean turkey slices (3 oz.) and 1 cup of red grapes delivers a quick dose of protein and energy that feels great. When faced with the choice between red or green, choose red. The dark skin of the red grape is a great source of resveratrol, which is a powerful anti-aging substance!

Ladies, as my fabulous, 60-year-old mother likes to say, “Butts are in.”  She’s right too.  The days of flat backsides are out, and the rage is to have a nice, toned, shapely curve to your booty.  With celebrities like Kim Kardashian setting the backside bar, we really can’t get too much shape there. 

So take these 4 easy, great-butt exercises and create the body you crave!

  1. Use the Stairs.  How many times in your day do you encounter stairs and opt to take an escalator or elevator instead?  Every time you do this, you miss out on a great opportunity to claim your sexy booty.   Use the stairs instead.  Tighten your abs and butt while climbing the stairs and feel that sexy, Hot Mommy transformation!
  2. Just Dance.  Put on a song with a great beat, bend your knees and roll your hips.  While keeping your butt and abs tight, shape away.  Throw a couple of squats in the mix and you have a fun and effective way to get that sexy shape you want.  By the way, anyone who knows me also knows my signature dance move, which involves a very fast squat to the floor.  Hey, if you’ve worked hard for it, have fun with it!
  3. Play.  In addition to the Peek-A-Boo Lunges and other tight butt exercises in the Hot Mommy Happy Baby Fitness Solution, you can also come up with additional ways to shape your booty while making your child giggle.  Try a backwards lunge and a make a few funny faces.  Children find this exercise hilarious because it is an unexpected movement.   Squat down and quack like a duck.  Any playful movement with deliberate, focused muscle movements is a step toward your sexy, toned-butt goal. 
  4. Take a Walk.  Need a quick break from your workday?  Do you and baby need a little fresh air?  Get your walking shoes out and find a sidewalk with a hilly incline.  Pull your butt and ab muscles in tightly and power up the hill.  Rest on your way down and repeat.

Just 28 calories per ½ cup serving and NO fat! 

Melt away your baby fat, stay slim and healthy AND impress your family and friends with this delicious, low-calorie, fat-free salsa.  It is absolutely addictive!   Add to healthy, lean meats or vegetables to add irresistible flavor.  

This has been a family secret for years.  I get asked to bring this salsa everywhere, and until now, I have not given up the recipe.  However, in the name of healthy mothers and families, I am passing on this delectable recipe for you to devour guilt-free!

Slimming Summer Salsa

28 Calories per 4oz Serving

1-      28 oz can of whole peeled tomatoes (175 calories)

2-      4 medium green onions (10 calories)

3-      1 bunch cilantro (12 calories)

4-      ½ to 1 clove of garlic (2-4 calories)

5-      2-4 medium size jalapenos (8–16 calories)

6-      1 ripe tomato, diced (15 calories)

7-      Pinch of salt

Makes approximately 4 cups (8 servings).

Empty the entire contents of the 24 oz. can of tomatoes into a blender (including water).  Trim the onions away from the chives, chop into small pieces, and add to blender.  Do not blend until all ingredients except for tomato have been added.  Cut the leaves from the cilantro bunch and add to blender.  Add garlic and jalapenos, cut into several pieces, ensuring that the jalapeno seeds are also added.  Blend for 5 -10 second.  Stir in diced tomatoes without blending again.

 Are you a flirt?  I hope so…

Flirting is such a big deal.  It can make or break a relationship. 

Think for a moment.  When was the last time you flirted with your partner?  Was it today?  Yesterday?  Last week?  So long ago that you can’t even remember?   

Having a baby is spectacular, but we all know that it leaves you and your partner with very little free time .  In this phase of a couple’s relationship, it is easy for life to become so much about the baby’s needs that the relationship is completely neglected.  It is okay that you are busy.  It’s awesome that your baby’s needs are the most important thing to you right now.  However…your romantic relationship with your partner needs a little attention as well. 

That is where flirting comes in.

Don’t wait until the end of the day, when you and your partner are both exhausted from your work, home, and parenting demands to try to give each other a little attention.  If you are mindful of your relationship for just a few moments throughout the day, it goes a very long way to keeping your romantic bond alive. 

What do I mean?

Think about it, when you first meet someone, and that rush of a new romance fills you up, it is those little interactions that make your head spin and your heart flutter.  Maybe he sent you a text message or maybe you called and left him a sexy voicemail.  Things like this are so easy, don’t require a lot of time or energy, but keep you thinking warm, happy and sexy thoughts about your partner.  If you make a concious effort to pay attention to these things, you absolutely can have a very healthy, satisfying and romantic relationship with your partner and still be terrific parents. 

So how are you going to get your flirt on?  I’ve listed 5 fun ideas. 

1)      Stop and stare at your partner as he is getting dressed.  Then give him a, “Wow, you look hot.” and walk away.  He will be beaming all day with warm thoughts of you. 

2)      Pick out a sexy pair of panties to wear in the morning.  Send your partner a text mid-day hinting at what you are wearing and have him guess.  This simple step adds anticipation to reuniting at the end of the day, and…(you fill in the blank).  ;)

3)       As your partner is walking out the door in the morning, give him the usual goodbye kiss and add a graze across his backside.  Men love it when we initiate interactions like these.  

4)      Call your partner when you know he won’t be available to answer.  Leave him a sexy voicemail.  You can say you are thinking about him, ask him out for a date, suggest some alone time later that evening, or simply tell him that you adore him.  Whatever feels right is great, just do something! 

5)      Slip a note in his wallet that says something suggestive.  Be creative.  Think about the smile on his face when he finds it.

If I told you that you could cut a substantial amount of calories from each meal every day by simply doing nothing, would you believe me?   By nothing, I mean NOTHING!  Literally!

So what is it? 

I can’t wait to tell you…but first…

Remember, dieting is as much a mental journey as a physical one.  Most people can battle their cravings for a few weeks and lose weight short term, only to see it come right back on when they resume their normal eating habits.  The REAL challenge is losing weight and keeping it off!  So how do you not only diet, but change your eating habits permanently without committing yourself to a life of misery? 

Easy. 

In the Hot Mommy Happy Baby Fitness Solution, we learned how to use cognitive restructuring to change our thought patterns. Why cognitive restructuring?  Well, it works.  In fact, this morning I helped my son bake sugar cookies, then passed up a harmless looking piece of angel food cake after lunch, and then opted to snack on an orange instead of a handful of candy. 

Do I get tempted?

Sure.  I love food and wouldn’t mind indulging.  The kicker is…I don’t indulge and it isn’t hard.  I am able to redirect the thought that craves the food to a productive thought.  So this morning when I looked at the warm, golden, sugar cookies coming out of the oven, instead of reaching for one, I thought about how firm my abs felt.  This afternoon when passing on the angel food cake, I thought about how great my toned arms look.  When picking up the orange instead of the candy, I thought about how I would feel after eating each snack, and opted for the orange so I would feel energized and healthy. 

Okay…so back to that tip…The Absolute Easiest, Most Effortless Diet Tip Ever…

You can cut hundreds of calories each day by doing nothing.  Ironically, this successful dieting strategy is also a successful parenting strategy as well.  Go figure. 

So what is it?

It’s Patience.  Stop rolling your eyes!  I’m serious!  This works!

At you next meal, eat a sensible portion of food.  You will most likely still be hungry.  Instead of reaching for more, wait.  Look at your watch and wait a full 5 minutes.  Talk to your family members, coo at your baby, admire the stucco on your ceilings, or hey…even work on your ab toning exercises while sitting at the table.  It doesn’t matter what you do, just wait.  After 5 minutes, if you are still hungry, eat another sensible portion.  Repeat. 

What you will find is that when you wait, you feel full.  Why?  It takes your brain 10 – 20 minutes after you first start eating to receive the necessary signals from your body that it is full.  So, you may have had plenty to eat, but you just don’t know it yet.  As a result, you keep eating and, VOILA!  Extra calories. 

So, at your next meal…simply do nothing after your first portion…and see how easy it is to cut away those extra calories and lose the baby fat! 

Lose fat!  Feel great!  Look hot!
